Yet another Su-Doku solver - you'll find this one is a little different!

SU-DOKU Puzzles... A very popular form of brain teaser testing your skill at arranging numbers (digits). These puzzles usually present a 9x9 Grid of Cells divided furthur into nine 3x3 blocks. There are clues in the form of single digit numbers in the range 1-9 added in some of the cells. The object of the puzzle is to discover and complete the correct digits for the remaining cells. Digits are used for convenience only, as there is no calculation involved. When completed, any row column or block must have one appearance of each digit within the range 1-9... Be careful out there... the puzzles are everywhere, and there is no known cure for the addiction...
 SUPA-DOKU
has been devised
particularly with the SU-DOKU puzzle designer
and experimenter in mind. The controls
and the way they function make it easy to SOLVE,
MODIFY, TEST and
SAVE whatever puzzle setup you happen to be
dealing with. SPD is not
for PLAYING Sudoku nor is it a puzzle
GENERATOR.Stepwise solving with SPD shows the update of each cell singly and in a distinctive and intuitive way. You can follow clearly the reason for each change as it happens. For this purpose, precise colored MAPPINGS and textual information are displayed at each step. SPD is essentially to SOLVE puzzles, maybe to CONFIRM a solution you have already arrived at manually. Or you can use it to find a HINT toward a particularly difficult puzzle. If you are really stuck on a puzzle you are doing by hand, put your results so far into SPD and do just one STEP, to see where you might make progress. If in Observation mode ALTERNATIVE 'moves' can be displayed on each step. You can also CHECK if your puzzle has a Unique solution and test for a Difficulty rating. With a bit of flair you can also CREATE original puzzles. |
Features...
SuPa-Doku aims... SPD is especially helpful to the newcomer to Sudoku and Sudoku solvers as prime attention is paid to clarity of solving details. There are a respectable number of strategic solving methods employed if not exhaustive. Most of the time producing SPD has been taken with making it a bug free, amusing, easy to use and versatile solver, which somehow also seems to become addictive to use. And, it solves every puzzle without your having to make any guesses.
There are TWO MODES selected by checkbox at bottom. Stay in 'Computation' mode for the strategic handling for difficult puzzles, or use the 'Observation' mode for easier puzzles. The latter is a simpler visual approach where the strategic methods don't apply.
Not implemented at present are an additional fast brute-force solver which would provide a quicker validity check and solution count. Also not yet available are plotted (spaced) cell candidates, I may offer an option on this although personally I prefer them bunched. Candidates are also not an option on the Export/Copy output. If these are badly wanted I will make an effort to provide.
I have also declined to provide detailed description of the strategy principles, mainly because the information is available from umpteen other sources and it would be more than a minor task to provide yet another version. The Help within the program has details of suitable sites to visit.
More strategies are planned but in the meantime SPD is very useful as it is, and has been initially released. If you think it a worthwhile project let me know and I will try to find time for improvements.
